Background and Objectives: BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) is known to be easily treated with Epley or Barbecue maneuver. But the recurrent BPPV in which vertigo is recurred after symptom-free period is problematic. We conducted a study on the factors or underlying diseases which influence the pathogenesis of the BPPV.
¡¡
Materials and Method: We divided the 100 patients, who visited Asan medical center, University of Ulsan college of medicine from May, 1999 to July, 2002 with vertigo symptom, into 2 groups which are non-recurrent (n=57), and recurrent (n=43). In addition, randomized and age-matched normal 50 patients (without dizziness) were grouped. The medical records of 150 patients were retrospecti-vely reviewed. The underlying diseases, hemoglobin level and liver function of the each patient group was compared.
Result: There was no significant differences between the recurrent and non-recurrent group on the underlying disease and other laboratory data. But the BPPV patients have higher prevalence of the hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM) than non-dizzy patients.
Conclusion: The exact effect of the hypertension or DM on the pathophysiology of the BPPV is not known, but it can be risk factors. It is thought to be helpful to control the underlying disease in the management of the vertigo symptom.
